I was raised in a low-income family whose survival depended on the help of social service agencies. As a young adult I began giving back to the community in which I was raised by volunteering in the same service agencies that allowed me the opportunity to advance in life. I continue to serve my community in a variety of capacities.
I began my career in education as an associate teacher in the Houston Independent School District. I transitioned from the public to the private sector June of 2011 and served as a high school administrator at a private, college preparatory school. Later, I became an adjunct professor at Houston Community College and Baker Ripley. I continue my work as an educator, working as an Art teacher for a public charter school and as an online tutor. My years as an educator, have provided me the opportunity to learn and grow in a variety of capacities. The diversity of my tenure in education has taught me to be a well rounded and respected leader.
I have been trained in a variety of crisis intervention programs and family counseling facilitation programs. I am also an experiential education trainer/facilitator. In January 2001, I completed a forty-hour training by the National Organization for Victims Assistance in community crisis response. In October of that same year, I had the opportunity to serve the victims of the 9/11 tragedy in New York and New Jersey. I have more than 25 years working with groups in both personal and professional development.
Throughout my life, I have continued to create art, repurpose furniture, and design and produce products.
In March, 2020, I published my first children's book, Miguel Goes to Eagle School. As part of my publishing journey, I started my own publishing company, Dancing Duck Publishing LLC. This allows me to help others navigate the new publishing landscapes as well as to maintain full control over my book and future projects.
